Research Support & the RUE Festival

One of the most distinctive things about SF Honors is that research here is real. SF's Research in Undergraduate Education (RUE) initiative gives every student — regardless of major — a pathway to conduct original research, work with a faculty mentor, and present findings to an academic audience. You don't need to be a science major or a graduate student. You just need a question worth pursuing.

Honors students are especially well-positioned to take advantage of RUE's resources: Honors Contracts, Independent Study Projects, and faculty mentorship arrangements all feed directly into research work — and completing a research project earns Honors Points.

Scope

What Counts as Research?

SF defines undergraduate research broadly: any creativity-, discovery-, or inquiry-based learning that leads to new scholarly insights or the creation of new artistic work — and then communicates it back to the community. That means your project can be:

  • Empirical — data gathering, experiments, surveys, scientific method
  • Analytical — interpreting texts, forming arguments, supporting a thesis
  • Creative — original artistic work with scholarly reflection
  • Interdisciplinary — combining approaches from multiple fields

Festivals & Showcases

The RUE Festival

Each spring, SF hosts the Research and Creative Scholarly Projects Festival — the centerpiece of the RUE initiative — where students from every discipline present their work to faculty judges, peers, and the campus community.

STEM Fest

In partnership with the RUE initiative, SF's Perry Center hosts an annual three-day STEM Fest each November. SF students and area high school students are invited to display posters showcasing STEM research and projects.

Beyond SF

External Research Opportunities

SF's RUE office maintains a curated list of external research opportunities for undergraduates — including summer programs, internships, and national research initiatives. The full list is maintained at sfcollege.edu/rue.
