The Math Team at Santa Fe College is the premier group on campus for those who enjoy mathematics. We engage in a wide variety of activities, from discussion of interesting mathematical topics to competition prep, in an informal and inviting atmosphere.

Friendly Competition

The Math Team participates in several competitions during the year.

SF competes in the AMATYC Student Math League test every Fall and Spring. This test covers topics up to Pre-Calculus and is very challenging. If you want to flex your intellectual muscle, this is the test for you. Top scorers from Santa Fe receive prizes and are eligible for scholarships from the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC).

In Spring 2027, Santa Fe will again host the Math Olympics. This event gives our team members the chance to compete with their peers from across the state, from Miami Dade College to Florida State College at Jacksonville. There are both team and individual components, with prizes for each.

Scholarship Opportunities

Members of the Math Team are eligible to apply for the Academic Team Scholarship, which is available to only a few groups on campus. See College Rule 7.14P Board of Trustees Scholarships (Procedure).

New Perspectives

Math Team meetings are a great place to broaden your mathematical horizons with topics outside the normal calculus/engineering sequence. We host guest speakers (faculty and student) and discuss many different branches of mathematics, from group theory to dynamical systems to game theory and probability. Topics of previous meetings include "How to Choose a Spouse", "How to Count Cards", and "The Problem with Pi".
