Initial placement for those not already in faculty position will be at step 1 and a max of six additional steps may be awarded based on the following criteria:

  • SF adjunct experience 48 credit hours = 1 step
  • Full-time higher education faculty experience 1 year = 1 step
  • Full-time K-12 teaching experience 2 years = 1 step
  • Full-time industry experience that is not only deemed relevant but is also essential 1 year = 1 step

Continuing contract faculty who accept an administrative appointment as an academic chair are considered to be on extended service leave from their continuing contract appointed position for the duration of their administrative appointment. Academic chairs who previously held continuing contract and who return to faculty positions will move back to the corresponding faculty title they would have held if they had remained faculty on the year of service step that corresponds to their total years of SF service as a faculty member and academic chair. In the event an academic chair did not previously hold continuing contract status, they will be placed on the assistant professor step that corresponds to their total year of SF service as a faculty member and academic chair.

Career Service Salary Range

Initial or interim placement on the Salary Schedule is generally at the minimum of the salary range for full-time and part-time positions. However, under special circumstances, including hard-to-fill positions and exceptional qualifications, placement may be made with approval by the President, as outlined earlier in the “Salary Adjustment” section of the Salary Schedule.

Promotional placement is generally based on an increase of up to 10% of the employee’s current salary or placement at the minimum of the new salary range, whichever is higher, subject to the internal marketplace and/or additional duties.

Salaries may also be increased by an appropriate percentage for additional responsibilities or increased duties that do not result in a promotion to a different paygrade. In the event those duties are reduced or removed, salaries would be reduced accordingly. Placement in a lower pay grade may result in a recalculation of salary.

Part-time hourly rates are based on dividing the annual salary by 2080 hours.

Promotional placement of management positions may be offered up to 20% above the minimum salary based on steps for qualifications beyond the minimum requirements. Qualifying steps for promotional placement are based on a specific percentage of the minimum of the salary range or for the employee competency level as follows:

  • 2% for each year of closely related, documented work experience beyond the required minimum
  • 2% for educational credentials beyond the minimum requirements
  • 5% for each documented competency proficiency above the minimum requirements.

Reclassification and Salary adjustments that don’t result in a promotion to a different job title in a higher complexity level but do result in advancement to a higher competency are generally at the minimum of the salary range. Based on available funding, and subject to internal and external marketplace factors, salaries may be offered up to 20% above the new competency level based on a specific percentage of the minimum of the salary range for the employee competency level as follows:

  • 2% for educational credentials beyond the minimum requirements
  • 5% for each documented competency proficiency above the minimum requirements.

Likewise, when reclassification and salary adjustment occur based on placement in a lower complexity or competency level, a reduction of salary may occur using the same percentages as set forth above.

Salary adjustments may also occur for individuals who remain in the same competency level of their current position based on a review and subject to available funding, internal and external marketplace factors. Salary adjustments may be offered up to the maximum of the current complexity level as follows:

  • 2% for each year of closely related, documented work experience beyond the required minimum
  • 2% for educational credentials beyond the minimum requirements
  • 5% for each documented competency proficiency above the minimum requirements.
