Before Your First Appointment
Before your first appointment, you will need to complete an initial intake packet and assessments. These forms may take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
We will send you a link with instructions for completing the intake packet. If you make your appointment in person, you may also receive the forms directly.
Please complete your online forms and assessments by 10 a.m. on the day of your appointment. This allows us time to review your information and provide it to your counselor before you meet.
During your first appointment, you and your counselor will meet either in person or by video to discuss your concerns and complete any additional assessments that may be needed. By the end of your appointment, your counselor will help you summarize your concerns and explore options for support.
Your First Appointment
Your first appointment is an opportunity to talk about what's bringing you in, ask questions, and work with your counselor to identify the best way to support you. You don't need to have everything figured out before your appointment.
During Your Appointment
Your counselor may ask about:
- What you're experiencing
- How things are affecting your daily life
- Your goals for counseling
- Your strengths and sources of support
- What might help you move forward
Together, you'll discuss your concerns and explore options that fit your needs.
Counseling Is a Conversation
- You don't have to know what to say.
- You don't have to know exactly what's wrong.
- You don't have to have a specific diagnosis.
- Just start where you are.
What About Confidentiality?
Counseling services are confidential, with limited exceptions required by law and safety considerations.
Your counselor will explain confidentiality and answer any questions you have about privacy.
How Many Appointments Can I Have?
There is no limit on the number of sessions. As long as you are enrolled in classes, you can receive services.
The Counseling and Wellness Center provides short-term counseling focused on helping students address current concerns and develop strategies for moving forward.
Your counselor will work with you to determine the appropriate level of support.
What If I Need More Support?
Sometimes, a student may benefit from services outside the Counseling and Wellness Center. If that happens, your counselor can help you explore referrals and other resources. See our Scope of Practice and Referral Resources.
You can also visit our Resources page for additional support.
