Graduates of this program will be prepared for a career in the growing information technology industry in occupations such as database administration, network and computer systems administration, software development, computer systems analysis and computer programming. Students can choose from two different tracks within this B.A.S. program: the Networking Track or the Programming Track.
An estimated 100 jobs for these professionals will become available each year in Alachua and Bradford counties from 2015-2021, while more than 900 annual job openings will become available in North Central Florida.
The Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) in Information Systems Technology (IST) builds upon the skills learned in SF’s Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Programming and Analysis or Networking Systems Technologies. The B.A.S. program is specifically designed to provide a smooth transition from either of these two A.S. degrees into the bachelor’s degree program, incorporating 60 credit hours of A.S. degree coursework into the B.A.S. degree. The B.A.S. program gives these A.S. graduates an opportunity to become more proficient in programming, network design and management, and database design and management, and provides the necessary professional development demanded by the growing local information technology industry.
The program curriculum consists mainly of advanced technical courses that branch into different overlapping fields of specialization, complemented with courses in management and supervision. With the help of an academic adviser, students who enroll in the IST bachelor’s program will be able to customize different study and career paths based on their strengths, interests and future professional plans. Students are required to complete 39 credit hours in upper division courses as well as 21 credit hours of general education courses after being admitted into the program.
- Have a 2.5 overall GPA.
- Have earned a minimum of an Associate of Science in Information Technology.
- Have completed the College Level Academics Skill Test (CLAST), unless exempt. See testing section below for more information.
