Service Projects

CES offers group service projects on and off campus throughout the semester. Group service projects are a great way to experience new volunteer activities and connect with students who serve their community. To find out about the latest group service opportunities, subscribe to email updates or stop by Building S, Room 135.

Eligibility: Students must sign up in advance with the CES Specialist to participate in off-campus group service projects. SF provides transportation to and from the service sites, and student volunteers agree to participate in service projects for the duration of the scheduled time. To participate in college-sponsored trips, you must be currently enrolled in at least three credits at Santa Fe College with a GPA of at least 2.0 without any outstanding fees.

Alternative Spring Break

CES sponsors an annual Alternative Spring Break service trip for groups of SF students during spring break. Alternative break trips originated with college students in the early 1980s as a counter to "traditional" spring break trips.

Students must apply to participate as there are limited spots available. If a student’s application is selected, all expenses for the trip are covered by CES including transportation, lodging, and food. Applications are available at the beginning of the spring semester and are due the first week of February.

Past Alternative Spring Break Trips
  • 2020 Guana Tolomato Matanzas Research Reserve, Ponte Vedra
  • 2019 Lutheran Social Services Refugee Resettlement Program, Jacksonville
  • 2018 Puerto Rico Family Response Center, Orlando
  • 2017 Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program, Jacksonville
  • 2016 Florida State Parks, Habitat for Humanity, and Sulzbacher Center, Jacksonville

Eligibility: Students are selected to participate through an application process. To participate in college-sponsored trips, you must be currently enrolled in at least three credits at Santa Fe College with a GPA of at least 2.0 without any outstanding fees. Students must be at least 18 years old to participate in overnight trips.

On-Campus Service Opportunities

Gainesville Harvest @ SF

The Gainesville Harvest at SF food pantry is located at H-104, close to the Gator Den. It is open on Monday mornings for all members of the SF community to receive non-perishable grocery items and baked goods. Volunteers can assist with morning bread pickup, processing and organizing donations, and distributing food during pantry hours. For more information, contact Kerry Chancey at kerry.chancey@sfcollege.edu or the Civic Engagement Specialist.

Saints Share Wear

Saints Share Wear is Santa Fe College's on-campus thrift shop featuring gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, and housewares. Most items are priced at $1 with a valid SFID. Proceeds from this project are used to offer scholarship opportunities for Career Service employees who are pursuing the opportunity of higher education, as well as many other Career Service Council initiatives. To learn how to get involved, contact csc@sfcollege.edu.

Online Service Opportunities

Online students can find virtual service opportunities through several online platforms. Numerous local agencies also offer remote service opportunities. Contact the Civic Engagement Specialist to confirm that an online volunteer opportunity qualifies for service hours. Here are some places to get started:

Recording Service Hours

Whenever you complete a volunteer activity, be sure to log your service hours using this form. Documenting your service hours is an important way to measure your individual impact as a volunteer. You can contact the CES Specialist for a copy of your service hours.

Civic Engagement and Service Award

At the end of every academic year, the most active student volunteers are recognized with the Civic Engagement and Service Award. This recognition is based on student participation in CES events, group service projects, and individual service. Students must report their volunteer hours to the CES Specialist to be considered for this award.
