SF campuses receive emergency cabinets to combat growing risk of opioid overdose

December 18, 2025

The Santa Fe (SF) College Police Department recently obtained approximately 15 Naloxone Emergency Cabinets for installation across the Northwest campus — as well as at all SF satellite campuses — through a partnership with the Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR) via a grant through the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) Overdose Prevention Program.

"These cabinets are meant to be accessible to anyone across the SF campuses in the hope that our students, faculty, staff, and visitors who may be at risk will see these cabinets as an opportunity to obtain necessary medication in the case of an overdose," said SFPD Lt. Mark Barley.

The program provides access to FDA-approved emergency opioid antagonists (naloxone), as defined in section 381.887(1)(d), Florida Statutes, to organizations that serve individuals at risk of witnessing or experiencing an opioid overdose. Organizations enrolled to distribute naloxone include substance use and mental health treatment providers, shelters, housing coalitions, hospital emergency departments, maternity units, federally qualified health centers, sober living homes, services, veteran service organizations, recovery community organizations, peer networks, and colleges or universities.

The Overdose Prevention Program is now distributing these to all 67 county health departments in Florida.

"Our purpose is to provide Overdose Recognition and Response Training, and distribute free naloxone kits to individuals in the community who may experience or witness an opioid overdose," said Patience Shackley, ACFR Mobile Integrated Healthcare Peer Specialist.

The locations of these cabinets on the Northwest Campus are:

  • Library (first floor adjacent to the circulation desk)
  • Teaching Zoo Administration Offices
  • Gym (adjacent to the Fitness Center)
  • Food court (next La Fortuna restaurant)
  • Construction building (lobby)
  • Cellon Institute (east entrance)
  • Building S elevator lobby (coming soon)
