Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo earns gold-standard AZA accreditation

October 14, 2026
The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo has earned accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), continuing a distinction the zoo has maintained since 2000.
AZA is considered the industry’s global standard for animal welfare, and AZA-accredited institutions undergo the accreditation process every five years. The SF Teaching Zoo is the only zoo located on a college campus accredited by the AZA, which is comprised of 255 facilities in 12 countries.
The association’s accreditation recognizes a commitment to high standards in animal wellbeing, veterinary care, conservation, education, safety and zoo operations. The accreditation process requires a rigorous review of the entire institution, including an extensive application and an on-site inspection conducted by a team of zoo and aquarium professionals.
For the SF Teaching Zoo, accreditation also reflects its unique role in educating future zoo professionals.
Faculty and staff work alongside approximately 100 students enrolled in Santa Fe College’s Zoo Animal Technology program to care for more than 50 species and operate the zoo. Through the program, students gain hands-on experience in animal care and zoo operations while learning professional standards they can carry into careers at zoos, aquariums and other animal care organizations.
Earning accreditation reflects the work of generations of students, faculty and staff who have contributed to the SF Teaching Zoo and its mission. It also recognizes the continued support of the Gainesville community, whose visits, memberships, donations and involvement help support the Zoo’s work in animal care, conservation and education.
The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with last entry at 2:30 p.m.
