How to install a YubiKey

Setup Instructions

  1. Insert the YubiKey into an open USB port on your computer (if the computer doesn't see the device, try removing it, rotating it 180 degrees, and re-insert it into the computer)
  2. If you are using Windows 10, download the YubiKey Authenticator software from the Microsoft Store (macOS users can download it from the Apple Mac App Store)
  3. Start the YubiKey Authenticator software
  4. Click the "Add account" button
  5. Go to the Security Info page of your Microsoft 365 account
  6. Click the "Add method" button
  7. Select "Authenticator app" from the drop-down list and click the Add button
  8. Click on the "I want to use a different authenticator app" link
  9. Click the Next button
  10. Click the "Can't scan image?" box below the QR code
  11. Copy and paste the Account Name and the Secret Key into the appropriate boxes on the YubiKey Authenticator app and click the "Add account" button
  12. Click the Next button on the QR code screen of the Security Info page
  13. Enter the code currently being displayed in the YubiKey Authenticator app into the appropriate box on the Security Info page and click the Next button before the code changes in the app
