Everybody needs insurance, because everyone faces risk: individuals, businesses, governmental units, and non-profit organizations. As new technologies and new business models continue to emerge, the challenge of managing risk is ever evolving, making risk management and insurance an exciting career field. The industry remains strong during economic downturns and provides for a rewarding life with competitive salaries and the opportunity to help people and businesses to avoid disasters and rebuild lives when disasters are unavoidable.

The certificate in Risk Management and Insurance Operations is an 18-credit hour program that quickly provides students with an introduction to the field of insurance. Students can complete the certificate in 2 semesters! The certificate includes coursework in Principles of Property and Liability Insurance, Personal Insurance, Commercial Insurance, essential Microsoft Office applications, keyboarding, and an internship course. Although a specific internship is not guaranteed, the intention of the internship course and assigned internship is to provide students with the opportunity to work with experienced business development professionals on a real-world sales campaign. The internship site, for those in Gainesville, will likely be close to Blount Hall; however, the sales campaign experience may or may not be with a local company.

Upon successful completion of the Risk Management and Insurance Operations certificate (grade C or better in all coursework), students may apply for and receive the 20-44 Personal Lines Agent, 4-40 Customer Representative, and 2-40 Health Insurance Agent State of Florida Licensures. After successful completion of the certificate, students may apply for Licensure without the need to take the state exam.

Students may leave SF after completion of this program to become an Insurance Sales Agent, Insurance Underwriter, or secure other insurance industry professional positions.

After completion of the certificate, students may also continue their education in the Associate in Science, Business Administration – Insurance & Risk Management program as well as other Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science programs.

Students successfully graduating from this certificate, with grade of C or better in all coursework, can apply for the following State of Florida licenses.

Requirements for Admission

The PERT Exam is required, demonstrating college level skills in reading, writing, and math. In addition, students should be familiar with computers and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Coding certificate programs which have earned formal approval under AHIMA’s Professional Certificate Approval Program (PCAP) adhere to quality standards in programming, instruction and curriculum for non-degree granting academic coding certificate programs.

PCAP approved coding certificate programs offer a comprehensive curriculum which meets or exceeds rigorous PCAP coding competencies and have been evaluated for compliance with faculty qualifications for coding education and program standards.
