Overview
The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo is home to the Matschie’s tree kangaroo, an endangered species native to a small area of Papua New Guinea.
While we can't celebrate Tree Kangaroo Awareness Day at the zoo this year, we still want to introduce you to these rare, majestic creatures. Visit our Facebook and Instagram pages every Tuesday throughout May as we share videos so you can learn about these animals and how to help them in the wild.

Take a journey into the cloud forests of Papua New Guinea and explore the world of the Matschie’s tree kangaroo. Learn how Dr. Lisa Dabek, founder of the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program, and researchers are learning about the life of tree kangaroos and how supporting local coffee farmers can help save an endangered species.
Last month, we asked you to submit questions about our Matschie’s tree kangaroo, PJ. Tune in as our Assistant Curator, Chelsea, reveals all about our long time tree kangaroo resident. Can’t get enough of this little guy? Follow PJ on Instagram @PJthetreeroo for updates and your daily dose of cuteness.
