Program Overview
Diversity is the hallmark of the Santa Fe College Dance Program. The Dance Program is 350 dancers strong with more than 50 Dance majors. Through this highly recognized program, dancers can receive an associate of arts degree with a Dance emphasis to transfer to an upper division program or work professionally in the field of dance performance, dance instruction, or choreography.
Santa Fe is on the cutting edge of dance training through work with a distinguished faculty that includes professionally and academically trained faculty, who are committed to excellence in Dance. Dancers train in a variety of techniques including Ballet, Modern, Jazz, African, Tap, body conditioning techniques such as Yoga and Pilates, and Composition. The Dance Program offers opportunities to study with guest artists-in-residence and take master classes with such artists as The Joffrey Dance Group, Doug Gillespie, or the Kate Weare Dance Company, Brian Brooks of Donald Byrd Contemporary Dance Company, Denise Vale of the Martha Graham Company, and many others. They also perform to local school audiences to educate and inspire new artists to pursue their goals in the performing arts.
The premier performing company of Santa Fe College's Dance Program is the internationally recognized Dance Theatre of Santa Fe. DTSF is a consistently featured group at the American College Dance Festival and the Florida Dance Festival. The company performs at the new SF state- of- the- art Fine Arts Hall to an annual audience of over 3,000.
SF Dance is a conference site for the Florida Dance Festival on Tour, where over 300 dancers from around the state converge at SF and UF campuses to take classes in dance techniques offered around the state and network with Florida college and pre-professional programs. Adjudicated dances are performed in a much anticipated culminating performance of the young dancers with dancers from the Dance Theatre of Santa Fe and the shared host dance program, the University of Florida. The Dance Program and DTSF is featured in the internationally recognized successful documentary film "Dance of My Heart," which tells the life story of Santa Fe's late master artist-in-residence Alberto Alonso and his wife Sonia Calero-Alonso.
The Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree is a two-year liberal arts degree designed for the student who intends to transfer into a bachelor's degree program. You do not earn an A.A. in a specific major; however, you do have the opportunity to track toward a specific major at a university by choosing a related advisement track at Santa Fe College. If you don’t see a track geared toward your intended transfer major, you may choose General Studies and speak with your academic advisor.
