Finding Books

Searching For Books

The library catalog contains all the materials owned by the Santa Fe College library. You can search for a topic (anywhere), title, author, or subject heading, and you may also search for different formats (including eBooks, videos, audio, and more). You will need a valid Santa Fe ID card to check out material from the library. All items check out at the first floor circulation desk.

You can view a tutorial on using the library catalog below.

Finding Books in the Library

The results of your search are presented in a list. You can change the order of this list by choosing one of the Sort Options at the top of the list.

Each item in your results list has an icon identifying it as a book, eBook, video, etc. To get full information about the material, click the blue title.

Catalog Result

If you'd like to retrieve a book, write down the entire call number (Example: RA644.8.D44 N66 2014) and use the Map It button to note which floor the material is on.

  • New Books (1st floor) and Circulating books (3rd floor) may be checked out.
  • Books in the Reference collection (2nd floor) are for in-house use; they do not check out
  • Media items are located on the 2nd floor or behind the Circulation Desk (Classroom Collection).
  • Items on Reserve are for in-house use only and are behind the Circulation Desk.

The status of the book will be on the far right. If a book says Available, it should be on the shelf and able to be checked out. You may see several different statuses in the library catalog.

Status Explanation
Available Material is checked in and on the shelf. You may check it out.
Due 8/15/14 4:30pm A date indicates the material is checked out and due back on that date. You may click the Request link to request that the book be held for you when it is returned.
NonCirculating The word NonCirculating or the phrase In-House Use means that this book can be used in the library only, and may not be checked out.
Lost    Missing If a book is Lost or Missing, the library may be able to obtain another copy; you can request the book through an Interlibrary Loan.
Has Not Arrived    In Process If a book is On Order, Has Not Arrived, or In Process, this book has been ordered but is not yet available to use.

Searching Other Libraries

While the library has a large selection of materials, you may need a title that we do not own. There are several options to obtain the items you need. Santa Fe College has a reciprocal borrowing agreement with all 28 Florida state colleges and 12 public universities, including the University of Florida. You can check out up to five books from any of those libraries with your Santa Fe ID card.

If you want to search for materials at other colleges and universities, use the Union Catalog. If you find the material at another college, you may request it through UBorrow or an Interlibrary Loan. An ILL is where the library will borrow this book for you from another library. This service is usually free for you, but may take up to a few weeks.

To search other libraries, you can visit WorldCat, a catalog that searches thousands of libraries across the nation and worldwide.
