Spring Break at Santa Fe College

Each group will have a maximum of 16 students, with a total camp maximum of 48 students.

Space Challenge

Santa Fe College Community Education will be launching its 2nd College for Kids (CFK) Spring Break Space Challenge from March 21-24. This year’s program is designed to engage both the students and SF College’s unique resources including an on-campus planetarium. Students in grades 4th-8th will launch into an adventure of a lifetime as they explore the space frontier through hands-on, interactive team activities.

During the four day camp, students will visit the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium. Coordinator and co-host of the PBS TV series Star Gazers, James Albury will conduct a tour of the universe using the latest high definition full dome digital projection system.

Classroom activities will be hands-on and include both collaborative and individual tasks. The future scientists and astronauts will work in teams, building and programming LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots to perform mock missions; learn about propulsion systems that power rockets, tackle how to navigate through space via the stars themselves, and engineer and program rovers to explore planets hundreds of light years from Earth. New this year is the Lasers, Optics & Holograms class where young scientists can learn about the electromagnetic spectrum, how holograms work, make their own artwork and 3D goggles.

Explore Exoplanets

The Kika Silva Pla Planetarium will be your space training simulator for exploring newly discovered extra-solar planets, many light years away from Earth.

Engineer and Program a Rover

Engineer and program a Lego Mindstorm EV3 Rover to understand how to conduct a successful long distance rover mission. Train to be roboticists in five specialized training areas.

Celestial Navigation

Learn how to navigate the stars by just using the stars! Compete with your fellow space explorers during the “Great Constellation Shootout” for exciting space related goodies!

Lasers, Optics & Holograms

Learn about light, the electromagnetic spectrum and 3D optics. Make your own 3D goggles and artwork. Find out how holograms work and make one in the class.

Become A Rocket Scientist

Learn about propulsion systems in space by constructing and launching your own rocket.

Create Your Own Constellation

Increase your knowledge of the constellations by making your own to take home. With acrylic paint and LED lights, students will recreate their favorite constellation on canvas.
